Grace Kwok
Lau Ying Ying

Cowrice

This creative unit is made up by Philip Lau, the father, Grace Kwok, the mother and their daughter, Lau Ying Ying.

Since they met, the couple has been creating works reflecting their worldview and the birth of their daughter, now aged 7, certainly changed the way they see the world, leading to their child innocence-inspired creations.

Emulating their own simple lifestyle, Cowrice was jointly created by Philip Lau and Grace Kwok in 2003, with a focus on ‘silly’ themes, and using photos, texts, video, illustration and handicrafts. The work gives off a peaceful feel, expressing the authors’ weariness of modern society. Ying Ying was born in 2007 and they keep creating with her around, discovering through the child’s eyes a wonderful world amid the dull routines.

My Little Home in Town Village

Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory 和 Chitty Chitty Band Band等等。

The work stems from our place, where the family lives. We draw inspiration from Ying Ying’s fantasies about the village and its surroundings. We stroll across this old village, where we have lived for almost four years, recording through sketching and calligraphy our interesting encounters and fantasizing.

In the exhibition, we try to present our fantastic world, where pink cats take the Cat bus across the Cat tunnel, 12 rabbits jump, with rainbow and the Moon rising high, squirrels scurrying on the wire, a polite talking parrot …

These look ordinary yet fantastic. Feel, listen, observe and fantasy will make you discover funny and unusual things.

Through our daughter’s eyes, we see a wonderful world amid the daily routines.

Using drawings, fabric crafts, embroidery and calligraphy, we install a room to interact with visitors, full of our fantasias in an actual space, an epitome of our town village.

Ying Ying has read lots of fairy tales together with her mum, including Alice in Wonderland, Wizard of Oz, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

命名  Name Giving

The work deals with “Name Giving”, the very first gift every baby gets upon birth. A Chinese name can be one or two characters that encompass parents’ expectations and blessings for their child. In older times, children were called by their Chinese names, every call bringing to mind parents’ expectation, with the child gradually internalizing the connotative traits of his/her name. However, more recently, parents tend to call their children by the English name, squandering the spellbinding magic of Chinese names.

Here the author presents a work centering around given names, revealing the meaning behind many of them, and combining unique handmade dolls to prompt visitors to re-think the cultural significance behind their Chinese given names and to pass down this tradition.

Ho Seng Hei
Lin, Tai-hsuan

The name Lin Hsiang Chun is already a curse on me, but the term “mama” is even stronger. Whenever I hear it, I feel powerful.

I have a son (nicknamed Black Bear) and I have published a poetry collection. I’m a teacher, editor, and a mother with poor cooking skills who but loves reading poetry and stories for my child, for love gives me strength.

     Itchy Hands Gallery

In children’s eyes, there’s no rubbish, as they can play with almost anything. The gallery is filled with stones, bird’s nests, beehives, leaves, and cicadas collected by Black Bear, and car toys. This is an interactive, ongoing exhibition: you are invited to play inside, then put everything back after playing to complete the game.

The body of work includes drawings made by children from the Macau Down Syndrome Association during a span of three weeks. The ailing children are not monsters, nor contagious. Like all children, they are energetic, like music, drawing and doodling. They are friendly, gentle and kind. So sweet they are that become our sweethearts. Like other kids, they show a variety of themes, candid lines, vast imagination and freedom in creation, transporting us to their innocent world and giving us a glimpse of their inner feelings.

Parent-child Workshop on Puppet Making Inspired by Children’s Drawing

Before I didn’t pay much attention to children’s drawings, although I could feel its purity. But when you give them a good look, the strokes, colours and designs will overwhelm you. Children draw and express themselves in a direct and passionate manner, and the result is pure and powerful painting. We may use adjectives like ‘simple and unadorned’ to describe it, and it is indeed a precious characteristic of children’s art. It’s no surprise that after experiencing their fancy world, the real world feels so flat!

Yet to grasp children’s world, you must turn yourself into a child. That would put you closer to them, letting you better understand their thinking ways and their peculiar perspective of the world.

How would it be if we create tangible puppets following the characters designed by the little painters in their drawing? It might be a good experiment. Such idea eventually led to the puppet making project, a seemingly adventure while we use needle, thread and cloth to present the treacherous, grotesque, lovely and silly characters from the children’s world on paper, with simple, unadorned techniques trying to convey the primordial child’s simplicity. The end result is a sincere representation of a fantastic world in children’s mind, bursting from their imaginations on paper.

Let’s feel it together. Perhaps originally the world is just that simple. Who knows?

Roly-poly Tingle

The stereoscopic roly-poly toy installation is a reinvention from the perspective of an adult based on children’s paintings.

Incorporating the creativity of the children painters and the artist, these installations are the artist’s reinterpretation of the world in children’s eyes.

The simple and ‘free style’ in children’s drawings can deeply touch me. The stokes are so strong that they imprint on my mind, making me marvel at the amazing wonders in their drawings – they are infinite in their imaginations, but not just on paper. My initial idea was to magnify those black strokes, twisting and joining bendable aluminum bars. This is my first trial of this creative concept. Am I afraid to fail because of its unpredictability? No, I am not, because children’s art has reminded me that we “Just let creativity run free from our hands!”

Flying with Your Dreams

I’ve been always excited by children’s drawing as they paint by instinct, happily and indulgently. Doodling on paper seems to give them great pleasure and be fun. Their rich colours look extremely naïve and lovely, and certainly very eye-catching, though we adults tend to pay lesser attention to their creations. This time, I draw inspiration from the little painters, re-interpreting their drawings. The creative process enables me to revisit my long-forgotten childhood memories.

It’s such a lovely day. Adorable elves get Lucy’s invitation for an afternoon party. Dressed to the nines, singing lighthearted nursery rhymes and heading together to the party, they would find colourful candies and juices prepared by Lucy on the fantastically glamourous hill.

They sing and dance, and play games while peeking through the kaleidoscope into another gorgeous, spectacular, ever-changing world.

The elves set a date for the next party with Lucy. Have you got the invitation?
